Democratic 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) confirmed in a Thursday interview with the New York Times that she supports slavery reparations for American blacks. The New York Times reported that Warren expressed her support for a policy that would pay money to black Americans who have been affected by slavery. Warren’s campaign staff declined to elaborate on how she would support reparations, but the calls for reparations came after she said the federal government should provide financial assistance to residents in poor communities affected by “redlining,” a practice where lenders refuse mortgages to people in financially risky areas. Warren is not the first 2020 presidential candidate to call for reparations. Sen. Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who proclaimed himself the country’s interim president, issued his "presidential" decree number 001, in which it is said it authorizes the deliveries of humanitarian aid to Venezuela. "As the commander-in-chief of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, I am confirming the decision allowing humanitarian aid enter the territory of Venezuela. Thus, I am ordering various elements of these forces to act in line with this instruction," the decree, published on Guaido’s Twitter page on Thursday, read. The Venezuelan parliament, led by Guaido and controlled by the opposition, on Tuesday authorized the international humanitarian aid deliveries to the country, too. The cargo is expected to reach Venezuela on Saturday. However, the government of President Nicolas Maduro has been opposing the deliveries, saying they might justify foreign intervention in Venezuela. Venezuelan opposition leader Guaido will personally accompany a convoy of “humanitarian aid” which is now stockpiled in Columbia as it makes its way into Venezuela, Reuters has reported earlier. Meanwhile, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said that Venezuelan military should let "peaceful civilians at the Colombian and Brazilian borders" to "peacefully bring in humanitarian aid", warning that any infractions "will not be forgotten." Tensions flared up in Venezuela in January when opposition parliament speaker Juan Guaido declared himself interim president, disputing last year's re-election of Maduro. The United States almost immediately recognized the opposition leader and were followed by a number of other countries. In the context of increasing reports of malicious activity targeting the DNS infrastructure, ICANN is calling for full deployment of the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) across all unsecured domain names. The organization also reaffirms its commitment to engage in collaborative efforts to ensure the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet’s global identifier systems. As one of many entities engaged in the decentralized management of the Internet, ICANN is specifically responsible for coordinating the top-most level of the DNS to ensure its stable and secure operation and universal resolvability. On 15 February 2019, in response to reports of attacks against key parts of the DNS infrastructure, ICANN offered a checklist of recommended security precautions for members of the domain name industry, registries, registrars, resellers, and related others, to proactively take to protect their systems, their customers’ systems and information reachable via the DNS. Public reports indicate that there is a pattern of multifaceted attacks utilizing different methodologies. Some of the attacks target the DNS, in which unauthorized changes to the delegation structure of domain names are made, replacing the addresses of intended servers with addresses of machines controlled by the attackers. This particular type of attack, which targets the DNS, only works when DNSSEC is not in use. DNSSEC is a technology developed to protect against such changes by digitally 'signing' data to assure its validity. Although DNSSEC cannot solve all forms of attack against the DNS, when it is used, unauthorized modification to DNS information can be detected, and users are blocked from being misdirected. ICANN has long recognized the importance of DNSSEC and is calling for full deployment of the technology across all domains. Although this will not solve the security problems of the Internet, it aims to assure that Internet users reach their desired online destination by helping to prevent so-called “man in the middle” attacks where a user is unknowingly re-directed to a potentially malicious site. DNSSEC complements other technologies, such as Transport Layer Security (most typically used in HTTPS) that protect the end user/domain communication. As the coordinator of the top-most level of the DNS, ICANN is in the position to help mitigate and detect DNS-related risks, and to facilitate key discussions together with its partners. The organization believes that all members of the domain name system ecosystem must work together to produce better tools and policies to secure the DNS and other critical operations of the Internet. The Guzman Lopez brothers, believed to currently reside in Mexico, are the sons of Joaquin Guzman Loera, aka “El Chapo,” who was convicted by a jury in the Eastern District of New York for his role as the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and Special Agent in Charge Scott Brown of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Arizona Field Office made the announcement. Joaquin Guzman Lopez, 34, and Ovidio Guzman Lopez, 28, are charged in a one-count indictment alleging that from in or around April 2008, through April 2018, they conspired to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana from Mexico and elsewhere for importation into the United States. This case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras. The case was investigated by HSI. U.S. crude oil production hit 12 million barrels per day in mid-February, according to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest report. EIA’s weekly petroleum report, for the week ending Feb. 15, showed crude output jump more than 1.7 million barrels per day compared to the same time in 2018 — from roughly 10.3 million barrels per day to 12 million barrels per day. “U.S. oil and natural gas production is breaking every record in the book, which helps families and businesses and our national security across the board,” Dan Kish, a distinguished senior fellow at the Institute for Energy research, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. Indeed, drillers continue to beat analysts’ expectations. For example, EIA’s November 2018 energy forecast didn’t see oil output hitting 12 million barrels per day until mid-2019. The month before, EIA didn’t see the U.S. hitting that milestone until the fourth quarter of 2019. EIA didn’t forecast the U.S. hitting 12 million barrels per day until 2020 or later in its January 2018 estimate. The massive increase in oil output is primarily driven by the Permian basin, which lays deep under Texas and New Mexico. In the past decade, hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling allowed oil and natural gas production reach never-before-seen height. The boom propelled the U.S. to become the world’s top oil producer, edging out Russia and Saudi Arabia earlier in 2019. While the oil and gas boom started on private and state-managed lands during the Obama administration, it’s gained steam under President Donald Trump. The Trump administration rolled back Obama-era policies it saw as damaging to the energy sector. “President Trump has awakened a sleeping American energy giant,” Kish said. ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - A bill that would let everyone in Minnesota drive no matter their immigration status is getting a lot of attention at the state capitol. While it has support, some lawmakers are arguing that it poses a threat to public safety. “A lot of people are scared to drive,” said Veronica Orellana, a supporter of the bill. “But a lot will drive regardless of them being able to or not. So, if this bill doesn’t pass, they’ll still roam the streets regardless.” 18-year-old Orellana is a DACA recipient from Worthington, Minn. She is one of a couple hundred people who crowded into the capitol Thursday to push for driver’s licenses for all. “We have very high hopes that this will succeed,” said House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler. A person is not required to demonstrate United States citizenship or lawful presence in the United States in order to obtain a non-compliant driver’s license or identification card. Non-complaint means one that does not meet Real-ID standards. “This law and this approach was the law in Minnesota until 2002,” Winkler said. There are an estimated 95,000 undocumented immigrants in Minnesota and many of them just drive anyway without passing a driving test or having proper insurance. That is why law enforcement is behind the bill as is the hospitality lobby. “Restaurants, hotels and resorts are highly dependent on immigrant workers to staff them and we know, at this time, we’re experiencing a huge workforce shortage in our state,” said Liz Rammer. So is Archbishop Bernard Hebda, who calls the bill a moral imperative. “In our parishes, most of which serve undocumented persons and their families, the inability to drive or doing so without a license is a major source of stress,” said Hebda.
